How do you execute a breakthrough idea?

So far in the Vijay Govindarajan Breakthrough Innovation With The Three Box Solution Video Series we have completed four modules:

Module 1: Strategy is Innovation

Module 2: Strategic Intent

Module 3: Core Competencies

And this week we begin:

Module 4: Ideation

This is where we learn how to put the breakthrough ideas we created at the end of Module 3 into practice. This is the key part of innovation: how to commercialize creativity; how to convert ideas into impact. As Thomas Edison said “Innovation is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” and the 99% perspiration is the challenge of execution. Corporations, VG says, tend not to lack for creativity and breakthrough ideas – Box 3 ideas; what they tend to lack is the architecture to execute those Box 3 ideas.

A common mistake is to think that you can use the organizational architecture of Box 1 – which is all about performance management and efficiency – to put breakthrough Box 3 ideas into practice. But breakthrough ideas require breakthrough execution – and a new, organizational logic.
