We have almost come to the end of Module 1 of the Thinkers50 Vijay Govindarajan Breakthrough Innovation with the Three Box Solution video series.

Video 8: Grameen Bank Example of Box 3 Innovation 

Grameen Bank was founded in Bangladesh in 1983 by Dr Muhammed Yunus to tackle the economic trap faced by the rural poor. He took the traditional best practices of leading commercial banks and turned them around, so beginning a micro-finance revolution that has gone on to provide services to over 9 million members – 97% of whom are women – in 81,000 villages. 

In 2006 Grameen Bank and Dr Muhammed Yunus were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below”. 

Grameen Bank continues to be a fine example of Box 3 thinking, as it continues to focus on next practices rather than best practices.
