Contrary to popular perception, the quest for passion is not a smooth and effortless endeavour. Instead, Jon asserts, it’s a demanding and often arduous journey replete with challenges and obstacles. Passion, he maintains, is a dynamic trait that fluctuates over time, leading to employees pursuing, losing, and regaining passion for various pursuits. Moreover, passion dynamics manifest themselves interpersonally, influencing observable behaviours that others perceive and react to. While individuals driven by passion have the potential to transform the world, Jon contends that we’re failing to fully harness this potential – a capacity that leaders must learn to unlock. Additionally, he delves into the realm of inequality, specifically examining how perceptions of disparities in resources and opportunities impact individuals’ attitudes, emotions, and behaviours.
Assistant professor of business administration in the Organizational Behaviour Unit at Harvard Business School, Jon teaches the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course (LEAD) in the Required Curriculum. Inspired by the belief that “people with passion can change the world for better” his research focuses on how to empower the passionate people, and how to make the world more equitable for all. Jon follows an interdisciplinary approach, leveraging social psychology, sociology, economics, and organisational behaviour, conducting experiments in collaboration with companies, local government, and NGOs. He received his PhD from Columbia Business School in New York, his MPhil from the University of Cambridge, and MA from the University of St Andrews, UK.
Jon is co-author of numerous articles, including ‘Stop Assuming Introverts Aren’t Passionate About Work’ (Harvard Business Review, December 2023); ‘Research: Your Love for Work May Alienate Your Colleagues’ (Harvard Business Review, June 2023); ‘Don’t Let Passion Lead to Burnout on Your Team’ (Harvard Business Review, May 2023); ‘”Follow your passion” is a recipe for being exploited at work’ (LA Times, May 2023); ‘The Complicated Life of Extraverts as Informal Leaders’ (SPSP Character & Context, February 2023); ‘Case Study: What’s the Right Career Move After a Public Failure?’ (Harvard Business Review, September/October 2022); ‘To Retain Employees, Support Their Passions Outside Work’ (Harvard Business Review, March 2022).
