Ideas

David Clutterbuck introduced supported mentoring to Europe in the early 1980s. He also introduced what we now call 360-degree feedback, which he discovered in Russia while travelling the globe reporting on good practice in management. David’s key areas of interest include coaching, team coaching, mentoring, talent development, leadership, governance, ethics and the decolonisation of coaching. His book The Talent Wave (2007) kick-started the systemic talent management movement. One of his current projects is trialling materials to develop school-age coaches and mentors, with a target of achieving five million young coaches over a five-year period. His current interests include AI in coaching and how to coach teams of teams.

Bio

David leads a global alliance of educators, Clutterbuck Coaching and Mentoring International. He is also co-founder of The European Mentoring and Coaching Council, for which he is now lifetime Special Ambassador and a Distinguished Principal Research Fellow in Human Capital at The Conference Board. He has held visiting faculty roles at several universities and continues to support students of coaching around the world.

David is author, co-author and editor of more than 75 books and hundreds of articles. He has delivered over 2,000 conference papers and is also co-editor of the Routledge EMCC Masters in Coaching and Mentoring series. His books include The Winning Streak (with Walter Goldsmith, 1985); Everyone Needs a Mentor (1985); Making Coaching Work (with David Megginson, 2005); The Talent Wave (2007); Coaching the Team at Work (2007); Powerful Questions for Coaches and Mentors (2013); Beyond Goals: Effective Strategies for Coaching and Mentoring (with Susan David and David Megginson, 2016); Coaching & Mentoring: A Journey Through the Models, Theories, Frameworks and Narratives of David Clutterbuck (2022).
