A trailblazer in the field of young women’s leadership and education, Julie shapes the leaders of the future by researching and bringing evidence-based, applied-neuroscience leadership coaching and development (normally reserved for executives in the C-suite) to reach girls and young women, where it can have the most profound impact – in high school. With research showing that leader identity – someone self-identifying as a leader – begins in adolescence, leadership development needs to start at school, she argues. While leadership competencies and tools can be taught, she explains, they are not going to be used unless someone has first self-identified as a leader.
Julie founded The Leadership Development Institute for Young Women with the support of her Girls Leadership Advisory Council. A former Pentagon Senior Management Consultant in Leadership, she is an advisory board member for the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up program. Julie has been recognised as the World’s #1 Coach for Young Women by Marshall Goldsmith; and Woman of the Decade for Girl Empowerment by the Women Economic Forum. She served as a young women’s leadership coach for the Discovery Channel show, Girl Starter, and the MTV show, MADE.
Girl’s Lead: Extraordinary Girls Share How You Can Stand Up, Step Out and Lead in All Areas of Your Life (Positive Role Model Press, 2017); BeYOUtiful: The Ultimate Girl’s and Young Woman’s Guide to Discovering Your True Beauty, Gaining a Higher Self-Confidence and Developing Personal Success in All Areas of Your Life! (Positive Role Model Press, 2010). Julie is a contributing author to Insights on Coaching, The Success Principles for Teens, and many other publications. She has been featured on NBC’s Today Show and in Forbes and The New York Times, and delivered hundreds of keynotes including Harvard’s CoachX on mindset science.
