Ranjay’s 2022 book, Deep Purpose, delivers an in-depth examination of corporate purpose. “Deep purpose” companies, he argues, energize their enterprise by inspiring employees and fostering greater trust with customers and partners. He argues that this revolutionary approach to business – the serious and deep pursuit of purpose – delivers game-changing results for both companies and society alike. Purpose, he explains, is a compass with which firms can navigate the inevitable trade-offs across stakeholders mode deliberately and effectively to balance their short and long-term goals. Ranjay’s recent work also explores leadership and strategic challenges for building high-growth organizations in turbulent markets.
Ranjay is the Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He is the former unit head of the Organizational Behavior Unit and the former chair of the Advanced Management Program. Ranjay has directed several executive education programs on topics such as building and leading customer-centric organizations, leadership in turbulent markets, and sustaining competitive advantage. His teaching awards include Best Professor Award at the Kellogg School, where he was on the faculty before joining Harvard.
