Belonging, pluralism, empathy building, and bridging aren’t simply logical, intellectual terms, argues Viswanathan; they are embodied and experienced and can be nurtured. Fostering belonging in our living rooms, classrooms and conference rooms happens not just through direct challenge or vocal opposition, but through self-awareness, thoughtful inquiry, and deep listening.
Executive director of New Pluralists, a funder collaborative growing the field of pluralism in America, Viswanathan was previously senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, program developer at the WK Kellogg Foundation, director of leadership development at Urban Habitat and director of strategy at the International Association for Human Values. She also founded the Nouvelle Via Youth Corps in Haiti in 2008, which she directed for four years. Viswanathan gained a BA in psychology and MA in the history of science at Harvard University.
