Thinker of the Month: Richard D’Aveni

Richard D’Aveni is our new Thinker of the Month. He is professor of strategic management at the Tuck Business School at Dartmouth University, the author of Strategic Capitalism, and the 2017 recipient of the Thinkers50 Strategy Award.

Hi. I’m Richard D’Aveni. I’m the author of The Pan-Industrial Revolution: How New Manufacturing Titans Will Transform the World.

The book is about what we expect to happen as a result of additive manufacturing and digital manufacturing. The boundaries around the industries are going to start to fall, and as a consequence, we’re going to see pan-industrial industries that didn’t exist before. Firms will be able to switch very quickly between different products. The additive manufacturing will allow companies to make bicycle parts one day, automobile parts another day. The consequence of this is how do you label a firm like that, and what do we call them?

This is going to change, radically, the structure of our economy, and it will change, radically, the nature of competition going forward. So, welcome to the new world of pan-industrialism.
