Ideas

Angela’s goal is to use psychological science to help children thrive. As a MacArthur Fellow, she helped devise empirical measures of grit and self-control and establish their predictive validity for a number of dimensions of success. This study found that these traits predict objectively measured success outcomes, even when controlling for cognitive ability. In her 2013 TED Talk she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success.

Bio

Angela is the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative. Previously she has been a management consultant at McKinsey and a maths and science teacher. She also founded a summer school for underserved children that was profiled as a Harvard Kennedy School case study. Her 2016 book, Grit, is a #1 New York Times best seller.
