Ideas

A prominent figure in coaching psychology, Erik de Haan focuses his research on the relational dynamics of coaching and psychotherapy. His work centres on understanding the critical interpersonal factors that make coaching effective, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between coach and client. He explores how the quality of the therapeutic alliance, trust, and emotional engagement significantly impact coaching outcomes and examines the relational and subjective elements of coaching, challenging traditional performance-oriented models by highlighting the importance of human connection, reflective practice, and the emotional intelligence of both coach and client.

Bio

Having studied theoretical physics in Amsterdam, Erik gained his PhD in Utrecht with his research into learning and decision-making processes in perception. He joined Ashridge Business School (now Hult International Business School) in 2006 and is the director of Hult Ashridge’s Centre for Coaching, as well as a professor of organisation development and coaching at the VU University Amsterdam. Erik achieved his MA in psychodynamic psychotherapy in 2013 and became a registered psychotherapist in 2015 (with the British Psychoanalytic Council). In 2017 he became a PCC validated coach with the International Coach Federation and in 2020 a Sr. Practitioner EIA coach and qualified ESIA supervisor at the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
