Richard D’Aveni is professor of strategic management at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. He is a winner of the prestigious A.T. Kearney research award and consultant to organizations and individuals worldwide. D’Aveni coined the phrase “hypercompetition” in the 1980s. Philip Kotler

Philip Kotler is truly the father of modern marketing. Marketing Management has been the marketing bible for generations of students throughout the world. But, much more than that, he has carried on over many decades as a pioneer of marketing in new industries and activities. He has remained relevant, engaged and curious. To influence practice and theory over such an extended period is a remarkable achievement and to do this through genuinely groundbreaking ideas is even more so. It is a great thrill for us at Thinkers50 to celebrate Philip’s work.

Henry Mintzberg

His work has focused on the work of the manager, and how managers are trained and developed. The author or co-author of 15 books, Mintzberg is, perhaps, best known for his work on organizational forms – identifying five types of organization: simple structure; machine bureaucracy; professional bureaucracy; the divisionalized form; and the adhocracy. He is also credited with advancing the idea of emergent strategy – the idea that effective strategy emerges from conversations within an organization rather than being imposed from on high.
